Gold Coast Airport to Surfers Paradise: Bus, Taxi, Uber or Transfer?

Paid promotion: Neil, who owns GC Airport Transfers, paid this project A$10 to write this guide. It’s job #1 of Tenner to a Million.

What’s the best way from Gold Coast Airport (OOL) to Surfers Paradise?

For most solo daytime travellers with light bags, Translink bus route 777 plus the G:link tram costs about A$0.50 and often takes 45–60+ minutes including waits (check the journey planner). Taxis and rideshares are faster — about 30 minutes / 25–30 km from Coolangatta according to Gold Coast Airport. A fixed-price private transfer from GC Airport Transfers suits groups, luggage and late flights. This guide is Job #1 of Tenner to a Million (A$10 from Neil), covering Queensland options honestly.

Prices updated: (Australia/Brisbane). Figures checked against Translink, Gold Coast Airport and live transfer sites — no invented numbers.

You’ve just landed at Gold Coast Airport (OOL) in Coolangatta. Surfers Paradise sits about 25–30 km north — roughly 30 minutes by car, according to the airport’s own FAQ. Do you take the bus and tram, grab a taxi, open a rideshare app, or book a private transfer?

This guide compares all four with figures checked against current official sources. Where something couldn’t be verified, you’ll see “check current prices” instead of a made-up number.

1. Public transport: Route 777 + G:link

This is the cheapest legal way from OOL into Surfers Paradise.

The route

The Gold Coast Airport transport page describes Route 777 as a limited-stop express from the airport to Burleigh Heads via Palm Beach. Get off at Burleigh Heads station and take the G:link tram north to Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise and beyond.

Important: Translink’s general “Airport services” summary still mentions a connection at Broadbeach South. After the tram extension (from Monday 7 September 2026), the airport’s live page and current 777 stop lists point to Burleigh Heads / Stockland Burleigh Heads. Confirm your trip in the Translink journey planner or app before you fly — termini change.

There is no train at Gold Coast Airport. Route 760 runs to Varsity Lakes (for Brisbane trains) and Robina; it is not the usual Surfers path.

Time and frequency

A Translink 777 timetable sample shows about 17–18 minutes airport to Burleigh Heads station, often around every 15 minutes in that window. The tram onwards to Surfers adds more time plus any wait. Visitor guides often ballpark the full trip near 45 minutes in good conditions; off-peak waits and luggage can stretch it. For early or late flights, check the journey planner — the airport notes that service hours differ by route.

Fares: 50 cents, go card or contactless

Translink’s 50 cent flat fare covers South East Queensland buses, trains (not Airtrain), ferries, trams and on-demand. Distance does not change the price.

Transfer from the 777 to the G:link with the same go card or contactless Visa/Mastercard (or wallet) and the trips count as one journey — typically A$0.50 total, not twice. Translink transfer rules: tap on/off with the same card; next transfer within 1 hour; up to 3 transfers; journey under 6 hours; final trip starts within 3.5 hours of first tap-on.

A go explore card covers unlimited daily travel if you’ll ride a lot. The airport says go cards and go explore are available at WHSmith in Domestic Arrivals. SEQ fare payment is prepaid/contactless — don’t expect to pay the driver in cash.

Luggage reality: A$0.50 wins for one person with a cabin bag. Two large suitcases, a pram or tired kids after a red-eye make bus-then-tram less fun.

2. Taxi

The airport places the taxi rank at the southern end of the terminal (near International Arrivals / across from Rydges). Listed operators include 13cabs (13 22 27) and Black and White Cabs (133 222).

Queensland maximum metered fares as of 1 July 2026:

  • Flagfall: A$3.80 weekdays 7am–7pm (except public holidays); A$6.20 otherwise
  • South East Queensland distance: A$2.77/km
  • Waiting: A$1.04/minute when stopped
  • Booking fee (if booked): up to A$1.90
  • Tolls and airport access fees can be added

Over roughly 25–26 km to Surfers, a weekday day-rate meter often lands in the high A$70s to around A$90 once waiting time is counted. That is an estimate from regulated components, not a quoted fare. Traffic, night flagfall and lights move the meter — ask for a receipt if you want the breakdown.

Taxi wins when you want door-to-door now, no app, and accept a variable meter.

3. Rideshare

Follow terminal signs to the designated rideshare zone (Uber is described at the southern end near Domestic Arrivals). Prices are set by the apps — there is no fixed public tariff for OOL→Surfers. Off-peak they can look similar to a taxi; Friday nights, events and weather can surge. Compare the app quote to a taxi and a fixed transfer after you land.

Rideshare wins when you have the app, the quote looks fair, and you’re fine walking to the zone.

4. Private transfer — when fixed price wins

Private transfers sit between public-transport frugality and meter/surge surprises: book ahead, pay a fixed per-vehicle fare, and meet a driver who tracks your flight.

When it wins (fairly)

For one light traveller at midday, the A$0.50 bus + tram is better value. A private transfer earns its keep when:

  1. Groups and families — A$95 for a sedan (or a van for more seats) split across several people often beats multiple taxi/rideshare fares, and everyone stays together.
  2. Luggage — multiple large bags, golf clubs or a pram: door-to-door beats stairs and crowded carriages.
  3. Late or early flights — when the 777 isn’t running or the wait is long, a flight-tracked car matters more than the headline fare.
  4. Fixed fares — no meter creep in Surfers traffic, no app surge after a delayed jet.
  5. Kids — pre-fitted seats beat hoping the rank taxi has a booster.

Other brands (including Con-X-ion at the airport desk) also serve OOL — compare. This guide features GC Airport Transfers because that is Job #1 of this project (disclosed above), and its published Surfers fare is easy to stack against taxi maths.

Choose in 30 seconds

  • Solo, light bag, daytime: Translink 777 → G:link. A$0.50. Check the planner.
  • Door-to-door now, no booking: taxi or rideshare — compare the app to the likely meter.
  • Family, group, bags, late arrival, or hate surprises: fixed private transfer — about A$95 sedan to Surfers/Broadbeach via this booking link or text Kelly on +61 485 085 438.

Pick the option that matches your bags, your clock and your budget — not whoever shouts loudest at the kerb.
