How do you get from Gold Coast Airport to the beaches in 2026?

From Gold Coast Airport (OOL) in Coolangatta / Bilinga, Surfers Paradise is about 30 minutes by car (airport FAQ, checked 4 Nov 2026). Daytime solo travellers with light bags usually win on price with Translink Route 777 + G:link at the statewide A$0.50 flat fare. UberX averages about A$56 plus a A$3.90 airport pickup fee; a metered taxi often lands roughly A$75–90; a fixed private sedan to Surfers / Broadbeach starts from A$95 per vehicle. Always re-check live quotes before you travel.

For one light bag in daylight, 50c public transport wins on price. For groups, heavy luggage, child seats or late flights, a fixed private transfer or a carefully compared taxi/rideshare quote usually wins on hassle.

Public transport — Route 777 and the G:link

Gold Coast Airport’s transport page (checked 4 Nov 2026) describes Route 777 as a limited-stop express from the airport to Burleigh Heads via Palm Beach, connecting with the G:link tram toward Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Southport and beyond. Route 760 runs to Varsity Lakes (for Brisbane trains) and Robina, and also serves Coolangatta / Tweed Heads. There is no train at the OOL terminal.

Confirm termini in the Translink journey planner — Translink’s Airport services page still mentions Broadbeach South; the airport’s live page points to Burleigh Heads after the tram extension.

Fare: Translink’s statewide 50 cent flat fare applies to SEQ buses, trains (excluding Airtrain), ferries, trams and on-demand (checked 4 Nov 2026). Pay contactless (Visa/Mastercard or wallet), go card, or go explore (WHSmith in Domestic Arrivals). SEQ buses are not cash-on-board for standard Translink fares.

Taxi, rideshare, or fixed transfer?

Taxi: Rank at the southern end of the terminal near International Arrivals / across from Rydges (13cabs 13 22 27; Black and White Cabs 133 222). Queensland maximum metered components as of 1 July 2026 (qld.gov.au, page updated 8 Oct 2026): flagfall A$3.80 weekdays 7am–7pm (except public holidays) else A$6.20; SEQ distance A$2.77/km; waiting A$1.04/minute when stopped; booking fee up to A$1.90 if booked. Tolls and airport access fees can be added. Over ~25–26 km to Surfers, a weekday day-rate meter often lands roughly in the high A$70s to about A$90 once waiting is counted (estimate from regulated components, not a fixed quote).

Rideshare: Follow terminal signs to the designated zone. Uber’s OOL pickup page (checked 4 Nov 2026) shows monthly averages to “Gold Coast” (not guaranteed): UberX ~A$56, Comfort ~A$64, Electric ~A$57, UberXL ~A$82, Uber Max ~A$90, Comfort Electric ~A$71. Uber states a A$3.90 Gold Coast Airport access fee on pickups. Compare the live app quote after you land.

Private transfer: Pre-booked, usually per vehicle (airport also lists Con-X-ion desk 10:00am–5:00pm + e-kiosk). GC Airport Transfers (disclosure: owned by Neil, founder of Tenner to a Million; site checked 4 Nov 2026): fixed per-vehicle fares, no surge, tolls included; Surfers / Broadbeach from A$95 sedan; Gold Coast ↔ BNE from A$175 sedan; child seats A$25; 24/7 with A$50 after-hours surcharge 10pm–5am; 5.0 from 150 Google reviews.

Coming from Brisbane Airport (BNE)?

Airtrain links BNE to Brisbane City and the Gold Coast line (G:link at Helensvale). Airtrain is not the 50c fare. From A$23.30 airport ↔ City stations (effective 27 Apr 2026); A$23.80 to other SEQ stations on BNE’s page. Roughly 1h45–2h to the Gold Coast. If your hotel is on the Gold Coast/Tweed and a direct OOL flight exists, OOL usually means less ground time.

Suburbs & beach safety (quick)

Closest to OOL: Coolangatta / Tweed Heads. 777 corridor: Currumbin, Palm Beach, Burleigh (tram at Burleigh Heads). Broadbeach and Surfers on the G:link (~30 min by car from OOL). Theme-park north (Oxenford / Coomera) is easier with a car or booked transfer. Byron Bay ~45 min by car (airport FAQ).

City of Gold Coast / Surf Life Saving Queensland (checked 4 Nov 2026): swim only between the red and yellow flags. No flags = no swim. Emergency: Triple Zero 000.
